For the past few weeks, we’ve been studying the relationship between men and women, specifically in marriage. Wives need several key things in a marriage, and they’re distinct from a husband’s needs. Last time, we explored the truth that women need a man who will act like Jesus, and love her sacrificially.
Women also need unconditional acceptance. Think about Adam’s response when he first met his wife. When God brought Eve to him, he immediately started rejoicing and speaking his affirmation over her. This is the kind of love that every woman yearns to have.
Ephesians 5:25-26 says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.” Here we see that love has another purpose. As husbands pursue and become more like Christ, their love and influence will also draw the wives closer to God’s truth. As His Word is reflected in the marriage, both spouses orient themselves based on God’s truth more and more.
Husbands have a unique responsibility and leadership burden. They are accountable for leading the home in sacrificial love, by God’s Word. Anything that hurts one marriage partner hurts the entire marriage; so it’s up to husbands to set the spiritual tone for the home by using their words to convey God’s unconditional acceptance.
It’s been said that, “What the eyes are to a man, the ears are to a woman.” In most cases, this is true. A wife needs to hear, consistently, that she is her husband’s top priority. Just as Christ gave Himself for the church, and cleansed her with His Word, a husband must continually give of himself, lead his wife closer to God, and affirm her as precious in his sight. This sacrificial love is what every woman truly craves.
