The Weight of Words

We Have Tremendous Power Through What We Say

The Weight of Words

Did you know that the average person speaks about 16,000 words per day? That’s a lot of words! But, what’s more impactful than the amount of words you use, is the power behind the words you choose. The words we use have the power to affect our own lives, and the lives of those around us. Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” You can convey some very strong messages to people using various phrases and although we may not believe it, everything we say has an effect.

In the spirit, our battles are waged by what we believe and what we say. That means that our words are deeply powerful, and can contribute to, or inhibit positive spiritual growth. What comes out of our mouths is proof of what’s in our hearts. Thus, the quality of our lives will be determined by the quality of our speech.

Jesus instructed us to weigh our words carefully. He lived as an example of this, as everything that He spoke revealed God’s heart. In Luke 6:45 (NKJV), He said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” What Jesus is saying here is, what you say shows others who you are. So, what sort of things typically come out of your mouth?

Changing the way you speak may seem difficult, but simple resolutions can have huge results. Instead of saying, “nothing ever works out for me,” start saying, “all things work together for my good.” Instead of saying “I can’t do it,” start saying, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Before you know it, you’ll find yourself praising God, instead of complaining. It will happen, because you keep speaking it into existence!
