Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” In this verse is a key truth, which we often overlook. If every part of our lives is directly influenced by the state of our heart, we have some serious work to do in guarding and maintaining it.
To find out the condition of your heart, simply listen to yourself. Hear what you’re saying. Watch what you’re doing. The state of your heart will be revealed in the details of your life. The devil’s goal is to poison our hearts so that we, in turn, sow the same unhealthiness into the lives of others.
What’s the antidote to this poison? Guarding our hearts. Making sure we allow God to infiltrate and purify us with His love, joy, and peace. So often, we want a harvest of goodness in our lives, but we neglect to pay attention to the seed. We’re not sowing life, so how can we reap it? The solution is to surrender to God, allowing Him to remove anything sick from our hearts, and replace it with His life.
Nothing is more beautiful than a healthy heart. You can work out, eat right, learn constantly, and succeed in a multitude of other ways; but the most attractive thing about you will always be a clean heart.
So…what things need to be removed from your heart? We can’t do this alone, but the Holy Spirit can cleanse us. What do you need to ask for from Him today? Submit to His prompting, and allow Him to clean out your heart. You’ll find that the overflow is so much sweeter and better once you do.
