Have you ever considered how much we do to make our lives as long as possible? There’s nothing wrong with it; it makes sense to want to live a long and healthy life. But when confronted with the possibility of death, we do anything we can to avoid it. Many of us are afraid to die, but rarely do we consider something far more awful: spiritual death.
Just as physical death is the separation of the spirit from the body, spiritual death is the separation of the spirit from God. While dying is often tragic, it’s a natural part of life, and can lead to an eternity with Jesus in Heaven. Spiritual death however can lead to permanent separation from God, which is far worse! Facing life’s struggles can leave our spirits weak, and in desperate need of help. But the good news is that Christ can resurrect us!
In John 11, Jesus brings his friend Lazarus back to life four days after he had died. When people thought Lazarus was gone forever, Jesus performed the miracle of resurrection, restoring him back to life. Now, when our spirits are dead or dying, Jesus can perform the same miracle and give us a new spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” When you are born again, you become the starring participant in the greatest comeback since Lazarus!
Some days you might feel like Lazarus: like you’ve been lying in your own grave for a few days. What you need to remember is that Jesus defeated death and through the resurrecting power of Jesus, you can rise up and face another day.
