Have you ever stepped into the unknown to do an important task and wondered if it would all be worth it? Maybe it’s befriending a neighbor, going into a new career, or taking a step to help somebody that you hardly know. Human nature tells us that we should be concerned about ourselves first in these situations, and we may be left wondering if we missed out on an amazing opportunity. Perhaps we can learn when it’s safe to take bold action from Jeremiah’s relationship with God.
In the first chapter, the Lord gave Jeremiah a vision that was crucial to the future of Israel:
Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?”
And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”
Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.”
And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”
And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.
(Jeremiah 1:11-13, NKJV)
As you can see from the interaction, there is an honest back and forth between them. This is an important piece in figuring out what your next step should be. Next time you’re concerned that your path may not be the right one, have an honest conversation with the Lord. His Word is also a powerful tool; God uses the Bible to speak to you and your situation.
The Lord goes on to explain to Jeremiah that He wants him to get ready for a war. He assured Jeremiah that though the battle would be hard, the enemy would not win because God was with him. God’s assurance was enough for Jeremiah to go to war and see his fellow countrymen hurt. Do you trust God in the same way? Are you willing to go into battle based upon God’s Word and promise to you? Would you take the risk if you knew you couldn’t lose?
Finally, God told Jeremiah not to worry about those who oppose or doubt him. Remember: you are indestructible when God is with you. It’s just a matter of trust. Have an honest conversation with Him, then go where He sends you. If there is anyone you want to have your back, it’s God!
