WHO do you listen to when you’re worried? Who tells you NOT to be afraid?
When I wake up to face the day, I know there will be many choices ahead of me. A routine day can turn to chaos in an instant, yet I do not fear what might happen…because God is with me! I want you to do the same. As we begin this new year, I want all of us resting in the promises of God, which starts with knowing Who has our backs each and every day.
In 2 Kings 6, we can read Elisha’s story and gain a better understanding of how God’s voice influences our lives and guides our choices. I absolutely love the picture 2 Kings 6 paints. Through Elisha we see that mere humans can hear from God in many ways. It amazes and humbles me that our God wants to lead us! He desires to communicate with us! We’ve just got to be listening.
One way to hear the voice of God is to be in constant prayer with Him. I’m not saying stop everything you’re doing and pray 24 hours a day…that is unrealistic. Constant prayer simply means we display a certain reverence about our day and about the choices we make that day. Constant prayer means offering up all the day holds to the Lord. That type of reverence comes with an awareness of how we impact others in Christ’s name. If we are to hear the voice of God, we must fellowship with our Lord through how we treat others, and praise His name daily.
Another way to hear the voice of God is to watch. We, as believers, must be on the lookout for God’s voice, perhaps through another person, a quickly fleeting thought, or a tug on our hearts. We can receive however God chooses to speak to us, if we are watching, waiting, ready to listen. Watching for God’s voice allows us the opportunity to be still, to quiet the noise around us and focus on what the Lord has prepared for us today.
In Matthew 26:41, Jesus tells us to “watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation…” Jesus knows the enemy will do everything he can to thwart us from accomplishing God’s plan. The enemy lives to derail our lives from God’s course. However, Jesus said there’s a way to stay on track, to hear the plan, and therefore, overcome the fear of making a wrong decision–watch and pray.
Friends, it really is that simple! Let’s watch for the Lord, waiting patiently for His promises to be fulfilled in our lives, and pray for His wisdom and guidance as we walk in step with Him–not just TODAY, but EVERY DAY.
