Absalom, Part 1

Absalom, Part 1

As a parent, you have a simple decision to make.  Will you continue a long line of inherited dysfunction or will you break the chain of bondage that has held your family back?

We’re instructed to raise our children in the way they should go, but all too often we end up bringing the baggage of our parents’ dysfunction into our own families. If we’re not careful, we simply recreate the same issues and raise our children in the same dysfunction.

Just because our mother or father had an issue doesn’t mean we have to experience the same in our lives and in the lives of our children.  You and I have the ability to once and for all break the negative patterns of behavior that have infected our homes.

David was a man after God’s own heart, yet the Bible is clear that he was also deeply flawed.  The dysfunction of his father’s house shows up again and again in his later life – in his own ability to control himself and in his refusal to discipline his children.  If we’re not careful, we’ll justify away our own behaviors, mistakes, and failures and simply create a next generation that is as judgmental of us as we are of our parents.

But God has something greater for us!  Something powerful happens when we learn to stop judging and release our mistakes and failures as well as those who came before.  It’s when we learn to release the pains and dysfunction of our past that we can begin to operate in the mercy we need to lead our children and discipline them with love.

If you have struggled with generational issues and cycles of dysfunction in your family, I want you to know that you are the one who can put an end to it for good!  In my brand new series, I want to show you how even good people have to cope with mess in their family.  If left unchecked, it will grow into the lives of your children and their children.  But when you take a stand today, you can release the power and healing of forgiveness to flow to your parents and to your children.

God wants to work His restorative power in your life and in the life of your children.  And it’s time for it to start right now!

Living in Grace and Peace,

Dr. Derek Grier
