Most of us are familiar with the concept of “six degrees of separation:” the idea that we’re all connected by six people or less. In the same way, God uses the people in our lives to bring us closer to the solutions to our prayers. We may be one well-placed conversation, or person, away from changing everything.
There is a story in 2 Kings about a young slave girl, a prophet, and some servants, who God connected to help save the life of a highly respected general, Naaman. He was the top commander of the Syrian army and was a powerful and honorable man; but, he was also a leper. He had recently captured a young Jewish girl and brought her back as a slave. When she learned of Naaman’s illness she said, “If only my master were with the prophet (Elisha) who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy.”(2 Kings 5:3, NKJV) This young slave girl is a perfect illustration of the mysterious way God places people in our lives to help us.
Armed with this new knowledge of a cure, Naaman went to the Prophet Elisha’s house, expecting Elisha to come out and heal him. Instead, Elisha sent a messenger, who told Naaman to wash in the Jordan River seven times to be healed. These were simple, easy instructions, but Naaman walked away frustrated that Elisha would not heal him in person.
But once again, God placed people in Naaman’s path to bring him closer to his cure. Several of his servants asked him, “If the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” (2 Kings 5:13, NKJV). They gave the advice he needed to hear to humble himself and receive God’s provision, God’s way. Naaman finally obeyed and washed in the Jordan, and was completely healed.
When paths cross for a divine reason, God is at work setting you up for an answer to your prayer. These relationships, and the blessings that come from them, are a part of everyday life when you let God lead you.
There are no degrees of separation between you and God’s love. Take a moment and ask Him to show you who He has placed in your life to encourage and guide you, today.
