When we’re first given a great gift, we take special care of it and use it wisely. It brings us joy, but over time, we may get a little casual with it and not necessarily cherish it anymore. Sometimes, God’s presence, which is the most important gift we could ever receive, is taken for granted.
In the earliest days of the nation of Israel, God’s spirit literally dwelled in the Ark of the Covenant. In 2 Samuel, Chapter 6, King David was tasked with carrying the Ark to Jerusalem. It was a time of peace and prosperity, and the people had grown accustomed to the Ark. The physical representation of the very presence of God had lost its significance!
Now, God loved His people so dearly that He gave them direct access to His presence, but He still had clearly outlined procedures for handling the Ark. David’s men had gotten so comfortable in God’s blessing that they forgot His majesty and mishandled the Ark. Since God keeps His promises, He can’t establish a consequence for an action without seeing it through. So, as a result, the first man who inappropriately touched the Ark, died on the spot!
King David realized the only way to restore peace was to reestablish a reverence for God’s presence and to thereafter handle the Ark as instructed. And, when they arrived at Jerusalem safely, David and his people were so thankful and overjoyed that “…all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet” (2 Sam 6:15, NKJV). The restoration of reverence led to a joyful revival!
Just as David, God doesn’t require our perfection as a prerequisite to experiencing His blessings, but we must never become complacent with the gift of His presence in our lives. So, when things are going wrong in our lives, we need to do a self-check to ensure that we are properly aligned with God. When we remember to honor God, and rejoice in all things, we’ll experience overwhelming peace and unspeakable joy!
